The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming Presidential election is October 9th and formerly incarcerated individuals remain disproportionately disconnected from civic engagement in general, and voting, in particular. This is a result of intentional efforts to disenfranchise Black people through the criminal justice system beginning during Jim Crow and continuing to today. Currently people in prison in New York State are prohibited from voting, but if you are not in prison — even if you have a felony conviction or are on probation or parole — you should be eligible to vote.
