One of the most crucial needs for families in which older adults are caring for their grandchildren is housing. The West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing, Inc. (WSFSSH), Presbyterian Senior Services (PSS), and New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) created the GrandParent Family Apartments to offer affordable, supportive housing tailored for older adults and the children in their care to meet the complex needs these families face.
Apartments and services are currently available to 50 families and they are now accepting applications for immediate occupancy. The building includes a ground floor activity center and garden, apartments with emergency cords in bedrooms and grab bars in the bathrooms, and 24-hour staff and support. West Side Federation For Senior and Supportive Housing, Inc. (WSFSSH) was formed in 1976 by a coalition of social service agencies, religious institutions, and community organizations. Together they created a form of housing designed to meet the diverse needs of older people and persons living with special needs. In addition to serving independent seniors, they serve frail elderly, older adults living with serious mental illnesses, the homeless, persons living with physically handicapping conditions, grandparents raising their grandchildren, and families.
