Homelessness in New York City has reached the highest levels since the Great Depression. The number of homeless New Yorkers sleeping in municipal shelters is now 64 percent higher than it was ten years ago. The number of homeless single adults is 143 percent higher than it was ten years ago.
People become homeless for a variety of reasons: loss of a job, lower wages, increased rent, landlord bullying, domestic violence, addiction disorders, extreme weather events, untreated mental illness and/or other health problems.
This PSA aims to raise awareness about the homelessness crisis and encourage New Yorkers to change their perception of the homeless. Simply choosing to make eye contact with a homeless person is one way to help them feel seen and reminded that they are human beings worthy of respect.
F.Y. Eye’s mission is to connect New Yorkers in need to the knowledge and services they deserve.
Our growing Impact Artist Collective is now producing F.Y. Eye-branded content to further promote messaging that can empower or protect a vulnerable population, a community-driven effort, an environmental resource and/or our democracy.
This PSA was created by Impact Artist Momodou Janneh.
